Believe All Women?

Michael Avenatti, the man who was Stormy Daniels’ and Julie Swetnick’s attorney. The man who may run in the 2020 elections. The man who preached “believe all women,” is now accused of domestic violence charge. First things first, I am not going to debate whether or not I believe Avenatti is guilty of the accusation; instead, I would like to discuss the irony of it all.

Judge Kavanaugh was ripped to shreds after he was accused of sexually assaulting Christine Blasey Ford. He was labeled as a rapist. His kids had to watch their father defend himself. The nation undoubtedly looked at him differently. The left was pushing for him to lose the Supreme Court seat before any evidence arose. Sadly for them, viable evidence never arose. Dr. Rose even identified witnesses; those witnesses did not collaborate her story, they actually did the exact opposite. Believe what you want, but in this country, you are innocent until proven guilty and it was clear that Ford did not have enough evidence to prove anyone guilty. Here is where Avenatti comes in. Julie Swetnick submitted a statement claiming Kavanagh would cause girls to be disoriented so he could gang rape them. Not only were the allegations a flat out lie, “Julie Swetnick and Mr. Avenatti criminally conspired to make materially false statements to the Committee and obstruct the Committee’s investigation” ( USAToday ).

Throughout this entire ordeal, Avenatti preaches to believe all woman. According to Avenatti’s own logic, we were supposed to believe Dr. Ford and Julie Swetnick with no evidence. But now that he is the one being accused we are supposed to believe him not the woman. It seems very contradictory to me.

I am all for believing women. I am for believing all humans. Rape and domestic violence are horrific crimes that I wish never existed. Do you know what is also a horrific crime? Falsifying a rape or domestic violence claim. These are accusations that should be taken extremely seriously, but after people cry wolf, it seems to lose that. Not only that, a false claim can ruin someone for the rest of his /her life. So should we believe all woman? No. There are horrendous people who rape, and there are horrible people who lie about it. If people could be convicted of a crime simply because of an accusation, imagine how the world would be. Everyone’s’ ex, boss, and loud neighbor would be locked up in jail merely because someone wanted to get rid of them. In America, we have a presumption of innocence, but people like to forget about that when it is convenient for them. It should not matter what political party a person stands for; the law should be the same. No one should be convicted of a crime when there is little to no evidence present. Maybe Avenatti learned his lesson.
